Customer Success Stories ....................................................................................................

Several months ago, 3E Company created a case study with Novelis, the world leader in aluminum rolling and beverage can recycling. The case study detailed how Novelis has successfully utilized 3E Compnay's Ariel MSDS Authoring and Ariel MSDS Distribution services. Recently, the case study was updated to reflect how 3E Company has helped Novelis prepare for Globally Harmonized Systems of Classification and Labeling for Chemicals (GHS), an international standard aimed at establishing a harmonized approach to the classification of chemicals based on their health, environmental and physical hazards. To learn more, please view the full case study here.

If you would be interested in participating in a case study, please email Jenny Bingham.

Tips N Tricks .........................................................................................................................

For those 3E Online users who have purchased the 3E Online Chemical Classification module, there are now a couple of additional reports options available. Users can now review hazard classification report data associated with Fire Code and SARA Hazard Classes by selecting the Classification Reports option under the Inventory Tab. After you select the report you are interested in you can export this to Excel to modify and sort the fields as necessary. Additional columns can be created in Excel if there is a need to separate out Physical or Health Hazards internally.

To do this:

  • Create additional columns within the Excel spreadsheet based on the number of Hazards listed.
  • Separate out each hazard associated to each product so that each associated hazard has its own column.
  • You can now Sort or Filter your Excel spreadsheet by an associated Hazard Class.

Product News...................................................................................................................

Product enhancements provide improved, advanced and sophisticated features to 3E’s current products and services. Below are a few enhancements that were recently released within 3E Online:

Hazard Class Reports

3E Online users who have purchased Chemical Classification are now able to review hazard classification report data associated with Fire Code and SARA Hazard Classes by selecting the Classification option under the Inventory Tab.

Product Deactivation (Catalog)

3E Online Catalog Managers now have the ability to deactivate products from their product catalog. By searching for a specific Catalog item within this tab the user can choose the 'Remove from Catalog' option located under the 'Action' button next to the product. Please note that the system will not allow users to deactivate a Catalog item unless it has been removed from all locations that are currently utilizing that MSDS within their location specific inventory

3E Company is constantly looking to improve our operations and add new products and services to better serve you. We always appreciate hearing what's on your mind. Ask the 3Experts...............................................................................................................

I read recently that the Department of Transportation (DOT) has changed the way that we must classify our products. What has changed and how long do I have to change my packaging if these changes affect the products that I ship?

DOT did recently make two classification revisions – a small change regarding flammable liquids, and a significant revision of toxicity criteria. The final rule, from Docket No. PHMSA–06–25476 (HM–215I), "Hazardous Materials: Harmonization with the United Nations Recommendations, International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code, and International Civil Aviation Organization’s Technical Instructions," revises the Hazardous Materials Regulations to achieve alignment with international standards.

The PG III flammable liquid criteria has been lowered from 141º F (60.5º C) to 140º F (60º C).

The toxicity criteria will cause some materials to be regulated for the first time, and will drop others that were previously regulated completely out of regulation. These altered criteria are outlined below:

Material properties                                                         Current PG                  New PG

Oral LD50 > 200, ≤ 300 (Solid)                                           Not Regulated                     III

Oral LD50 > 300, ≤ 500 (Liquid)                                                III                       Not Regulated

Dermal LD50 > 40, ≤ 50                                                           II                                 I

Inhalation toxicity by dusts and mists LC50 > 0.2, ≤ 0.5             I                                  II

Inhalation toxicity by dusts and mists LC50 > 4, ≤ 10                III                        Not Regulated

You will have plenty of time to review your product classifications and make any necessary changes to your packaging. These amendments were enacted in a voluntary status on January 1, 2007 and technically become mandatory as of January 1, 2008. However, DOT is allowing the continued use of the "old" flammable liquid (Class 3) and toxic materials (Division 6.1) classification criteria and packing group assignments to be used until Jan 1, 2012.
