Last week, 3E Company announced the acquisition of HSE Systems. HSE’s MSDgen Authoring software serves as a valuable addition to 3E’s comprehensive suite of products and services. This acquisition combines 3E’s superior 24-7-365 workplace compliance solutions, world class Ariel™ regulatory data and sophisticated data management tools for product safety and stewardship, with HSE’s MSDgen—a robust MSDS and hazard communication software for MSDS authoring and distribution as well as the generation of labels.  You can learn more about the acquisition here.

Product enhancements provide improved, advanced and sophisticated features to 3E’s current products and services.  Below are a few enhancements that were recently released within 3E Online:

  • Additional search features have been added to the 3E Online program that will allow users to search by and view custom values and product identifiers. This will enable those users who depend heavily on these fields to select their desired search results and view these within 3E Online.
  • 3E has added the ability to search by CAS RN within the “Build Inventory” page, under the Inventory Tab, of 3E Online. Users can now locate products in the catalog by CAS RN when modifying inventories.

With the deadline for SARA 313 rapidly approaching, did you know that 3E Online – MSDS SARA Candidate Lists module groups chemicals by compound, in addition to CAS Registry Number providing valuable information on reportable categories under SARA 313?

Here's how:

• Once you are in the Inventory Tab, select Regulatory Reports.
• Then simply select a facility from the facility tree, click on the Candidate List report under SARA 313, add any custom value fields to the report from the drop down menu and click Run Report.
• Once the SARA 313 Chemical Candidate report generates any compounds or chemical groupings can easily be identified by a compound code in the CAS# field.  Specific chemicals cited on the SARA 313 list are listed separately from chemical groupings which they may apply (e.g. Lead and Lead Compounds).

Just want to see the list of regulated chemical ingredients?

• Once you are in the Chemical Analysis Tab, select Regulatory Lists.
• Then simply select a facility, choose the SARA 313 list under Environmental>Superfund and click on ‘Analyze’ to get a list of products and the CAS RNs that are impacted by the selected list.
• You can also click ‘Run Report’ to get a printable list of products, by location with the CAS RN and the Chemical Name.
• You can also export this report into Excel, Word, or PDF by clicking on the Export/Print button in the tool bar.

Ask the 3Experts...............................................................................................................

I am a generator of Universal Waste Lamps.  I would like to know if broken fluorescent lamps can be managed as Universal Waste and are there any specific storage requirements for broken lamps?  I manage several facilities throughout the U.S., so I also need to know if there are any specific State requirements as well.

As you identified yourself as a Universal Waste lamp generator, I am sure that you understand the importance of handling waste lamps properly. These lamps should always be stored in properly marked containers that are of sturdy construction, kept closed while not in use, compatible with the contents of the lamps, and approved for shipping. In short, waste lamps need to be stored and packaged in a manner that will minimize the possibility of lamp breakage during storage and/or shipment

All states have adopted the Federal Universal Waste Rule.  However, many states have added additional, more stringent regulations - particularly in regard to the handling and disposal of broken waste lamps. The federal regulations are silent on this topic. The following states have determined that broken waste lamps must be managed as hazardous waste if they possess hazard characteristics:

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Vermont,  Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Several additional states are currently considering changes to their regulations that would also require broken waste lamps to be managed as hazardous waste.  Therefore, regardless of the states in which you operate,  you should review the relevant state regulations on a regular basis to ensure that you are compliant with the evolving regulations that surround the disposal of Universal Waste.

Mr. Kacirek is manager of the 3E Company Hazmat Response Team. He is responsible for managing hazardous materials management projects, as well as the evaluation of customer needs, quality assurance, customer service and technical growth for the spill/waste department.

Meet an Ariel Team Member – Part 1 in a 13 Part Series

This month's featured employee is Jennifer Rickman, MSDS authoring analyst.

Jennifer joined 3E in May 2005, and is responsible for MSDS authoring.  Since joining 3E, she has become well versed in authoring for different companies, and how to best learn and apply different company standards to documents.

When asked what she enjoys the most about working at 3E, Jennifer replied: “The people I work with are wonderful. I love to come into an atmosphere where I can relate and bond with everyone. The friendliness and the different personalities of this group are amazing. I also especially enjoy writing MSDSs for R&D chemicals. There is very little data to be found on these new products, therefore I have to rely on my chemistry background to figure out what the chemical compounds will do and how they will react in their intended processes to assess their potential hazards.”

Jennifer holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from North Carolina State University.  She is also pursuing her Master’s Degree in Analytical Chemistry from East Tennessee State University starting in August 2007.

WEB SEMINARS

Join 3E Company on June 19th for a web seminar entitled "Why World Class MSDS and Regulatory Information Management Does not Need to Cost a Fortune."

Most organizations do not have a comprehensive EH&S compliance plan in place, leaving them exposed to fines, or worse, not being prepared in the event of a spill or an emergency. Managing the information around their EH&S hazmat information is a critical aspect of any safety department. Companies need to be able to diagnose their Hazmat Compliance Information and requirements, to determine any shortcomings- and then determine how they will address them. Having the foundation of a good inventory of hazmat information will also ensure the safety and well-being of employees.

During this Web seminar, Michael K. Beckel, manager, consulting services, 3E Company will provide an overview and a series of analyses and tasks that need to be performed in order to face the challenges of hazmat compliance in a systematic manner. This seminar will also discuss the many options organizations have in order to successfully manage hazmat data in the most cost-effective manner.

Highlights of the seminar will include overviews of the following:

  • How to develop a comprehensive hazmat compliance plan
  • Options to manage hazmat database and information
  • How to manage compliance across multiple hazmat functional areas
