August 5-- This month's issue of
3E HazMat Matters' Tips N Tricks column contained
information based on Directive 2001/59/EC (28th ATP), which is
out-of-date. Please see a revision of the same Tip, now citing
the 29th ATP, which is published in the current version of
WebInsight.

Not sure how to find the EU classification for
an Annex I chemical in Ariel WebInsight?
When one runs a search for a
particular CAS number or chemical name in WebInsight, a report will
be generated, which references all the legislative lists containing
that chemical. The report is set up to display the citation of the
legislation, and the regulatory information pertaining to the
chemical. Many clients are particular interested in the information
found in Annex I to EU Directive 67/548/EEC on the classification,
packaging and labelling of dangerous substances. This list contains
the hazard classifications, as well as the R- and S-phrases, for
chemicals requiring particular classification and labelling in the
EU. The citation heading for Directive 67/548/EEC is where the
currency of the data in this list is indicated. The current citation
is:
EU. Directive
67/548/EEC on the classification, packaging, and labelling of
dangerous substances, Annex I, as last amended by Directive
2004/73/EC (29th ATP), as corrected
The citation indicates that
the list is current through the last adaptation to technical
progress (ATP), issued in April 2004, which was consequently
corrected in May and June 2004. Under the citation, the chemical
being searched is listed in eight of the twenty official languages
of the EU. The English language entry contains the classification
information for that substance, as well as EC and Annex I numbers
and Nota information. If the entry for a substance has changed since
the 23rd ATP, a footnote will indicated when the change was made In
cases where different classification information has been assigned
based on concentration, additional English language entries are
listed for all concentration based classifications:

The
individual R- and S- phrases indicated in the entry, as well as
other classification information has been hyperlinked to a Notes
section, which provides the full text of the classification
information. WebInsight also provides for advance searches within
this list. This functionality allow the user to identify all
substances classified with a certain R-phrase or hazard class, as
well as to generate a list of all the changes made to the list
through the publication of the 29th ATP, for example. While it is of
key importance, Annex I to Directive 67/548/EEC is only one of over
40 European Union lists available in the Western Europe module of
WebInsight.
